Benchmarking Indonesia’s Preferential Trade Agreements
TULIP produced a series of analytical benchmarking studies assessing the depth of Indonesia’s preferential trade agreements (PTAs). The studies mapped the substantive provisions of Indonesia’s agreements across a defined set of PTAs to assess the depth of commitments relative to regional comparators and best practice benchmark agreements. The studies focused on three key areas: sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, technical barriers to trade (TBT), and investment.
The studies were designed to strengthen Indonesia’s understanding of its own agreements and to inform its ongoing and future trade and investment negotiations, supporting more competitive and integration-friendly outcomes.
The analysis identified where Indonesia’s commitments were lagging and highlighted concrete areas where Indonesia could deepen its commitments in future negotiations.
The studies were presented as part of a lecture series titled “Deep and Comprehensive Trade Agreements for Improving Indonesia’s Integration with Global Markets”, co-organised by Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, ASEAN and the World Bank. They also provided a basis for TULIP’s contribution to the World Bank Deep Trade Agreements: A Toolkit for Policymakers and Practitioners.
