Lunch event: The Circular Economy – What’s in it for Developing Economies?
As major economies shift toward circular economy models, the implications for developing countries are becoming an increasingly urgent policy question. The transition away from the linear “take-make-use-dispose” model of production and consumption — driven by growing recognition of its environmental and climate costs — is reshaping trade flows, product standards, and global value chains in ways that create both challenges and opportunities for lower-income economies.
In November 2019, TULIP presented research on the implications of the circular economy for trade and developing countries at a lunch event at the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands in Geneva. The event brought together representatives from Finland and the Netherlands, developing and least developed countries, and international organizations, including the World Economic Forum, the World Trade Organization, and the International Labour Organization, for a discussion on how the circular economy transition can be made more inclusive and development-friendly.
