The Impact of Trump’s tariffs on African countries: Implications for workers and trade justice
This webinar, organized in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and as part of the series Trade Union Trade Talks, explored the impact of Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on African countries, and in particular, African workers and industries.
In particular, the discussion examined the impact of the anticipated expiry of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) vis-à-vis African countries’ exports to the United States. It focused on African vulnerability, highlighting specific implications of US tariffs on countries such as Lesotho, Kenya, and Ethiopia, whose economies depend heavily on textile and apparel exports to the United States. Moreover, it covered labour implications related to factory closure, wages, and working conditions. Finally, the webinar focused on trade justice and policy responses, highlighting strategic engagement options for African countries, including the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
