Tulip & EJD high-level panel: Integrating Development as the Missing Part of the Triangle (WTO Public forum 2023)

TULIP co-organised a high-level panel session at the 2023 WTO Public Forum alongside Europe Jacques Delors, a Brussels-based think tank working on European integration and sustainable development.

The panel, moderated by TULIP’s director Colette van der Ven and entitled “Unleashing the Potential of the EU’s Green Trade Agenda: Integrating Development as the Missing Part of the Triangle“, examined how the EU’s rapidly evolving green trade agenda — including unilateral measures such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) — is affecting developing countries and least developed countries. It argued that without adequately acknowledging and addressing these disproportionate impacts, the EU’s green trade agenda risks losing legitimacy and international support.

The session centred around recommendations put forward in a recent Europe Jacques Delors publication, EU Trade and Environment: Development as the Missing Side of the Triangle, co-authored by TULIP, which called on the EU to reemphasise the development dimension in the conduct of its trade policy and adopt a more differentiated approach based on countries’ levels of development.
