LSE & South Centre Workshop on Africa’s Trade and Green Industrialisation Agendas

On 23 July 2026, TULIP Consulting’s Cláudia Azevedo took part in a workshop in Geneva convened by the LSE Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa and the South Centre, bringing together African policymakers and trade and climate negotiators to discuss the role of trade and climate cooperation in an increasingly challenging geopolitical context.

Cláudia delivered a presentation on the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), drawing on TULIP Consulting’s latest brief for the LSE Trade and Climate Sustainability 2026 series, Beyond the Rhetoric: What the EU and UK CBAMs Mean for African Countries. The brief unpacks recent developments in the mechanism and examines its differentiated impact across the African continent, using country- and sector-specific case studies to illustrate how outcomes are expected to vary across short-, medium- and long-term horizons.

The session took place against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations in Brussels on the revision of the CBAM Regulation and its proposed extension to downstream products, alongside the European Commission’s work to finalise the implementing act on the recognition of carbon prices paid in third countries. These developments will play a significant role in determining how CBAM ultimately affects the EU’s trading partners.
