Telling the Steel Transition Story: CBAM, Competitiveness and Energy Security
Steel’s transition sits at the intersection of climate action, industrial competitiveness, and economic security, yet it remains under-reported and rarely covered beyond an industry lens. The India Green Steel Network convened a roundtable, bringing journalists from leading Indian outlets and policy experts into direct conversation.
Three substantive questions anchored the discussion: where India’s green steel policy stands today, how the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is reshaping Indian steel export economics, and what West Asia’s conflict means for energy security and the green steel transition.
Colette van der Ven and Sanvid Tuljapurkar, presented research on steel decarbonization and trade, examining CBAM’s heterogeneous implications for Indian steel. Drawing on empirical work, they discussed CBAM exposure across the sector including through a macro-economic, firm size and product lens and explored how EU-India cooperation can support the Indian steel industry in reducing that exposure, sharing key findings from our report “The CBAM and Beyond: Leveraging EU-India Trade Cooperation to Decarbonise Indian Steel.”
