Socio-Economic Implications of Enhancing Resource Efficiency
TULIP provided support to the International Resource Panel (IRP), a scientific panel hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that brings together leading scientists and experts to provide independent, authoritative assessments on the sustainable use of natural resources. TULIP’s engagement contributed to the development of a scientific report examining the relationship between resource efficiency and equity, a critical and under-explored dimension of the global sustainability agenda.
The report (forthcoming) investigates how the benefits arising from resource efficiency strategies can be distributed more equitably across different development contexts. While resource efficiency has long been recognized as essential for decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, less attention has been paid to who benefits from efficiency gains and how these benefits are shared within and across societies. The study addresses this gap by providing evidence-based policy options that advance both environmental sustainability and human well-being, with analysis spanning food systems, manufacturing and services, human settlements, and land and forests.
TULIP’s contribution focused on providing technical review, editing, and material inputs to ensure that the analysis effectively bridges scientific evidence and actionable policy recommendations.
